Windber, PA – D’Arcangelo’s or D’Arc’s Pizza has been a family-owned business since 1960. They are located on Graham Avenue on the main strip of Windber, PA. The business started when Pete D’Arcangelo found himself without a way to support his family when the coal mines closed down. He took everything he had, and purchased a 1910 building located on 2013 Graham Ave. from Berwin White Coal Company; the company in which Windber derived its name.
D’Arc’s Pizza started out as a small, family-owned grocery store, with the D’Arcangelo family living above the business. One day Pete D’Arcangelo, his wife Nicolette, along with their friend Pearl Leonardis decided to start selling pizza out of the store. All from Abruzzo, Italy, they created a family pizza recipe that is still used today. They started selling traditional square-shaped pizza in trays of 15 slices.
D’Arc’s soon became a popular hangout for high school kids from Windber and surrounding schools. Pete & Nicolette welcomed everyone into the shop with open arms. After they passed away in, the shop was taken over by their sons who have managed to continue the local traditions. The shop is managed by their cousin Cindy DiLoreto.
The menu was expanded over the years to include family favorites like a thin, round pizza called a Mike’s Pie that came from D’Arcangelo travels to Italy. A signature Nicolette D’Arcangelo’s Wedding Soup is also sold along with D’Arc’s famous Porkette Sandwich.
D’Arc’s Completes Renovation Project
Over the last few months, D’Arc’s has been working on a renovation and restoration project on their 1910 building. They have created new layouts for their seating areas, new paint, and displayed family pictures and historical décor from their Italian heritage, and even a tribute to the Windber mines from Pete’s history as a coal miner. They even have a Coach’s Corner bar area that is a dedication to local sports and athletes from Windber and surrounding schools. It features several hard screened televisions to view sporting events.
Along with the restoration, the business has also expanded their menu. New, homemade appetizers have just been added to the menu including Aunt Rose’s Meatballs, a traditional Italian Meat and Cheese Platter, and imported Italian wines from Abruzzo, Italy. D’Arc’s has also added a traditional dessert with a local spin. They will be featuring a scoop of Moo Echo ice cream with their homemade biscotti made by D’Arc’s Family Jam. This is another new, local business owned by Emery D’Arcangelo’s wife, Sharon and his granddaughter Ella.
In time there will be some other changes, but you can be sure that all of them will include traditional, homemade items.
D’Arc’s Pizza is open 6 days a week from 3:00 until 10:00 p.m. with the exception of Tuesday. They have seating for 70. For more information call 814-467-9709.
